How is the Guidepost Montessori approach different from conventional education?

At Guidepost, we join with parents on their mission to help their child grow and live well. Together, we design an education to empower each child to build the knowledge, skills, and confidence she needs to craft an independent, flourishing life.

Though there are many differences between the conventional approach and Guidepost, here are some of the most important:

Conventional Education vs Guidepost Montessori
What is the Guidepost Mission?

At Guidepost, our mission is to support each child in achieving her own independence. To do this, we help her gain the knowledge, build the skills, and craft the personal character she needs to flourish. Above all, our goal is to cultivate joy—in the pursuit of knowledge, in effort applied to work worth doing, in the achievements of herself and others, and in taking the steps to author her own life.

What are the outcomes of your programs?

Montessori education is known world-wide for having positive impacts on both academics and social and emotional skills.

At Guidepost Montessori, when we design an environment to meet the developmental needs and interests of children alongside personalized care and support, the child can learn advanced skills at an accelerated pace.

Our students, for example, regularly learn to read by the time they’re 4-years-old and can perform all four math operations with 4-digit numbers by the end of their Kindergarten year.

The language and math skills of our kindergartners are on a par with what children in conventional programs learn in 3rd grade or beyond! What’s more, our students learn advanced academics joyfully—while simultaneously developing deep focus, self-discipline, and positive social skills.

Do your programs include Kindergarten?

Yes! The third year of our Children’s House program, designed for 3- to 6-year-olds, is the capstone kindergarten year. In this year, the child has been well-prepared to experience an explosion of literacy, learn advanced math concepts, and use her hard-won ability to focus, problem-solve, and persist through challenges to then make advanced gains across the curriculum. Children who continue with Guidepost through Kindergarten are often well-ahead of their peers when they enter 1st grade.

Following elementary, students continue on to our Montessori middle and high school, the Academy of Thought & Industry: a school that combines a classical liberal arts emphasis on history and great books, and a Montessori emphasis on independence and agency.

How does Guidepost partner with parents?

At Guidepost, we want to make the best education the best for children and parents. This is why we provide year-round, extended-day programming at no extra cost, enabling consistent and uninterrupted access to the care and developmental support parents expect. We invite you into your child’s world—with daily photo and video updates, regular milestone meetings, and parent-child events that showcase your child’s progress. We work to understand your unique context and needs, so that we can provide support for milestones at home as well as at school.

In everything we do, we strive to cultivate joy as you watch your child grow!

discover the benefits of our mandarin immersion programs.

Children under the age of six absorb language effortlessly, which is why we are pleased to offer bilingual environments. In our Mandarin Immersion program, children learn both Mandarin and English literacy skills, however, the prevailing language spoken throughout the day is Mandarin. The overall emphasis on Mandarin rapidly increases fluency, as children feel naturally compelled to communicate with their Mandarin-speaking guides. Our daughter LOVES the elementary school program at Guidepost at Museum Mile. Public school was not a perfect fit for us, because every child has to fit within a narrow band of development to succeed. Anything faster or slower, and they stand out from their peers and frustrate their teachers who have a class of 30 kids to manage. Guidepost applies the Montessori method beautifully, and our child feels free, engaged, and excited to go to school every day. She now comes home calm, not frazzled, and is learning faster that ever.

This is an amazing school. Our son had been enrolled from 2-4, for 2 years. We had really seen him thrived in the care of guidepost. Highlighting some of the outstanding parts of the school 1) the attentiveness of teachers and staff. Within the first 2 days of joining the school, everyone at the school knows my son’s name. They showed their welcome to him and our family, making our transition much easier. The teachers are so caring! He had grown to be really attached to the teachers and staff and always excited to see them 2) lots of outdoor time. You may already have heard the importance of outdoor play for young children. It really helps their gross motor skills, mood regulation, prevention of nearsightedness… all kinds of benefits. They go to the park almost every day. My son loved the outdoor time 3) foster confidence and independence. My son has grown to be really confident over the years. I was really impressed at a young age, he was learning all the basic self care skills such as putting on a jacket , shoes , mopping the floors , cleaning dishes … and he could also sew, cut, paint… Montessori is a great way to empower them and help them gain confidence in handling day to day activities 4) diversity . The school is incredibly diverse. My kid is mixed of Asian and black. There are families with all kinds of background at the school. Truly makes anyone feels comfortable and included 5) academic and learnings. The class size is pretty small which allows each kid to have a very customized experience. My son was learning math to the decimal point at age 3 and doing 40+ pieces puzzles at school. Everyone has their own pace and the teacher adapts learning plan per kid Do not hesitate to join this school. It was such a great experience for our family. I wish we live closer so we can continue to attend. We were doing a 40 min commute ( that’s how much we liked the school for months).

Our son just started pre-school at Museum Mile and we are so happy with the experience he has been having. Teachers are warm and friendly, knowledgeable and show genuine care for the students. Student to teacher ratio is wonderful. The enviornment in class is calm and aesthetically beautiful. Our son loves working with the Montessori materials and comes home excited to tell us about his day, his friends, what he learned... his time at the park. We couldn't be happier with our decision to have enrolled our son at Guidepost Montessori Museum Mile. Apart from it providing a stimulating space for learning it also gives us and him a sense of ease, that he is at a place where human connection is valued and nourished.

My daughter has gone there for going on a year, since 2 years and a few months, and I'm blown away. It isn't just busy work or child care but the application of everything Maria Montessori articulates about a system for child development made real. The children learn to work together and build confidence in taking independent action. The Guides (teachers) take lots of photos of your child throughout the day so you can actually see them as they learn to draw, count, look at maps, play, and even learn to clean. I can't recommend Guidepost enough. Hopefully, this is the future of education in the US.

Guidepost Museum Mile is a great campus and we have been blessed to be a part of the community since its opening in 2019. Andrew and Sarah have created a warm and welcoming school environment where each student feels special. Miss Hannah, Miss Jewel, and Miss Ruth Ann in Children's House have a great classroom in Children's House and give each child individualized attention. Would highly recommend this campus. As a bonus, the children go to Central Park and neighborhood amenities for field trips and recess!

If you are looking for a small, diverse and welcoming school community for (almost) all ages, a beautiful learning environment with dedicated Montessori materials and incredible guides - then you found it! Give the leadership team an opportunity to convince you, you won’t regret it!
