Beaded 1000 Cube

A detailed guide to understanding the Beaded 1000 cube material and how it is used within the Early Years curriculum.

How does it work?

Guidepost’s Beaded 1000 Cube is a beautiful representation of 1000 golden beads, carefully constructed into 10-bars and 100-squares that are bound together into a perfect cube of 1000. This material makes real to the young learner just how big 1000 truly is!

For students who are being introduced to the categories of the decimal system (units, tens, hundred, and thousands), it also provides a critical impression of how the quantity of 1000 is made up of ten 100s.

Prerequisite Skills - In Early Years, work with the Beaded 1000 Cube presupposes:

  • Ability to count and write numbers to 10
  • Ability to identify quantities from 11 to 20

How to set up

Setup - The Beaded 1000 Cube is a more concrete (less abstract) representation of the quantity of 1000 than the wooden thousand cubes that are part of the golden bead set.

Carefully remove all packaging material. Store the cube on the golden bead math tray alongside the wooden 1000 cubes. After an initial introduction to the golden beads, you can say to your student, “These wooden cubes are all a thousand just like this beaded 1000 cube. They are all a thousand.”
